Fermented Ginger Beer

What is Fermented Ginger Beer?

Brewed ginger beer originated in Yorkshire, England in the mid-18th century, it came to fruition through the colonial spice trade with the Orient and the sugar-producing islands of the Caribbean. Subsequently, it became popular throughout Britain and it's colonies, as well as the United States, Ireland, South Africa and Canada.

When made from scratch, real ginger and lemons are used rather than the artificial or “natural flavourings” and citric acid in commercial ginger beers. By using a natural fermentation process, you end up with a self-preserving beverage, packed with beneficial bacteria and yeasts, that doesn’t need additional preservatives.

The beneficial bacteria and wild yeasts in homemade ginger beer make it a nutritionally rich drink that has health benefits, especially for the gut and the digestive system. Ginger is known for its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and gastroprotective activities.

Isn't all Ginger Beer fermented?

The answer is no. In fact, the majority of modern ginger beers are essentially ginger-flavoured sodas. These beverages are typically crafted by incorporating ginger flavouring or by boiling fresh ginger, followed by the addition of sugar and carbonated water. Unlike traditional fermented ginger beers, these modern variations lack the natural fermentation process, offering a different taste experience.

Is Fermented Ginger Beer a Kombucha?

While both are brewed, gut-friendly, and fermented, they differ significantly. Kombucha is tea-based, boasts a distinct flavour, and has a different starter and fermentation process.

Our Fermented Ginger Beer utilises a "ginger bug" as a starter culture. Despite variations in taste, both beverages share similar health benefits, providing a delightful and health-conscious choice for your beverage preferences.

Do you need to refrigerate fermented Ginger Beer?

To preserve it's vitality and flavour, it's crucial to store your Gut-Friendly Ginger Beer in the fridge until you're ready to savour them.

Similar to Kombucha, this drink continues to ferment at room temperature, resulting in a reduction of sweetness and increased carbonation. Without refrigeration, they will become highly carbonated, posing a risk of messy spills upon opening or, in extreme cases, bottle rupture. We're dedicated to delivering a beverage that's both alive and delicious, so remember, always refrigerate your ginger beer until it's time to enjoy.

Is Fermented Ginger Beer Alcoholic?

Classified as non-alcoholic by British standards. Although the natural fermentation process may yield trace amounts of alcohol, rest assured that our Fermented Ginger Beer contains less than 0.5% alcohol, akin to non-alcoholic beer. Enjoy the refreshing taste of our beverage without any concerns about alcohol content, making it a delightful choice for all.
